Mike's Corner
Dear Friends,
I don't know about you, but February always makes me think about my fireplace. I use it a lot during the winter to heat my house, as I'm sure many of you do, too. But as much as I like the efficiency of a fireplace, I also know it can be a dangerous thing if not cared for properly. So this month, we're featuring fireplace and chimney maintenance as our "Do-It-Yourself Tip" to help keep your home and your loved ones safe from fireplace and chimney fires this winter. We offer professional chimney cleaning and sweeping here at HomCo Ace Hardware, so give us a call and we'll send our expert staff to your home to inspect and clean your chimney.
Also in this month's newsletter, you'll meet another one of our expert staff members, Alex Davidson. Alex joined our team a year-and-a-half ago and we're glad to have him. He works full time in the plumbing department, so stop by and ask him for help when an uncooperative drainage system or leaky faucet has you stumped.
If you're taking on any strenuous projects this month, be sure to read "Todd's Top 5 Pro Tips" on preventing injury and stress. And after you finish a hard day's work, reward yourself with a batch of Habanero Hot Stuffed Peppers, our featured recipe with the local flavor of Rising Hy's Habanero Hot Sauce, carried at HomCo Ace Hardware.
We've added a new HomCo Ace Hardware Trivia section this month and we hope you'll find it as fun as we do. And last but certainly not least, we're proud to announce we've raised additional donations for Hope Cottage through our "Big Bucket Sale" on January 28th.
So far HomCo Ace Hardware has donated $6,700 to Hope Cottage in the past three months thanks to the generosity of loyal customers like you. Thank you for supporting our community mission to improve the lives of neighbors in need, and for your continued support of your local hometown hardware store.
Sincerely,

Mike Brackin

| Do-It-Yourself TIP
Fireplace and Chimney Maintenance
The most recent statistics show that fireplace fires cause more than 68,000 house fires annually. Without proper maintenance and cleaning, your newspaper kindling could quickly turn into a disaster, causing thick black smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) to enter your home, endangering the lives of you and your loved ones.
Your fireplace is the perfect way to keep warm and cozy as the Flagstaff weather drops. Keep friends and family safe and healthy by following these tips to prevent a fireplace fiasco:
1) Call HomCo Ace Hardware Professional Chimney Sweep Service and have us inspect and clean your fireplace and chimney at least once a year. Customers should visually inspect their fireplace and chimney once every few weeks to check for obstructions.
2) Keep Critters Out. Birds and other animals like to live in warm areas when the weather gets cold, and the chimney is one of the first places they'll call "home." Install a chimney cap to prevent animals and debris from getting in. Construction materials range from practical wire mesh to more elaborate and decorative brass and bronze. A brief consultation with your expert HomCo Ace staff will help you find one that meets your needs while keeping unwanted visitors at bay.
3) A Flue That Works for You. When lighting a fire, always be sure that the flue has been opened properly, and then, make sure it closes tightly after the fire has been extinguished. This not only minimizes health and safety risks but can also lower energy costs by reducing the influx of cold air into the house. To test how airtight your flue is, close it all the way and feel inside the fireplace for drafts; if you can feel cool air coming through and cracks or crevices, your flue may require repair or replacement.
Fireplace and chimney fires can easily be prevented if you follow these simple tips. If you need additional help with fireplace and chimney maintenance or would like to schedule an inspection and sweep,

Staff Profile
Alex Davidson
Plumbing Department
1.5 years with HomCo Ace Hardware
Alex Davidson likes a challenge. As one of HomCo Ace Hardware's expert staff members, he enjoys helping customers navigate the complexities of plumbing projects. "I love being an expert in a complicated department," said Alex, who works full time in the plumbing department. "Everything from setting up a whole home drain system to fixing a small faucet cartridge is the highlight of my job."
In addition to helping customers find solutions to their home repair and improvement challenges, Alex is fueled by a passion to protect the environment through small but conscious actions like replacing old light bulbs with energy efficient LEDs or CFLs. He applauds HomCo Ace Hardware's green initiative, and likes the energy-saving products offered at the store. Alex is especially interested in sustainable energy through HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems.
Alex has lived in Flagstaff for 20 years. Outside of work, he tackles activities that require contemplation before action, such as puzzles and chess. A former gymnast, Alex has coached boys' gymnastics and enjoys soccer. He's also done some acting locally with Theatrikos and has starred in student films. If he could pick any actor to play him in a movie, it would be Sean Connery because of their shared Scottish heritage.
Stop by HomCo Ace Hardware and quiz Alex on his expert plumbing knowledge. He works Monday through Friday and is ready to assist you with your plumbing needs. |

Community Impact
Big Bucket Sale Raises Donations for Hope Cottage
Flagstaff HomCo Ace Hardware helped raise donations for Hope Cottage through its "Big Bucket Sale" on Saturday, January 28th. The event marked the second time in three months that HomCo Ace Hardware hosted a fundraiser for Hope Cottage, a Flagstaff-based homeless shelter that provides emergency and long-term shelter services for women and children in need.

More than 100 customers participated in the Big Bucket Sale, filling pink and white 5-gallon buckets with as much merchandise as possible to receive 20% off their entire big-bucket purchase. Hope Cottage received $1 from the sale of every bucket. Stephanie Boardman, Executive Director of Sunshine Rescue Mission, Inc., which operates Hope Cottage and three additional shelters in Flagstaff, said the funds would go a long way toward meeting their clients' needs this winter.
"We are so thankful to have had another opportunity to partner with HomCo Ace Hardware to support Hope Cottage," Boardman said. "Just $2 a day feeds a woman with two children while $25 feeds and shelters them for a night. We're typically filled to capacity during the winter, so the Big Bucket Sale to benefit Hope Cottage couldn't have come at a better time."
The store's first fundraiser for Hope Cottage, held during "Ladies Night Out" in November, raised $6,500 for the shelter. Store Owner Mike Brackin said he's pleased by the outpouring of support from customers whose generosity helped make these donations possible.
"HomCo Ace Hardware has been proudly serving the community since 1975, and a big part of our community service is improving the quality of life for neighbors in need," Brackin said. "We strongly support our local nonprofit community, and we thank our customers for supporting Hope Cottage and their local hometown hardware store once again." |

Todd's Top 5
Pro Tips
Avoiding
Stress & Injury
1. Lift objects properly. Remember to always bend your knees, use your leg muscles, keep your back straight & avoid twisting to the side when lifting.
2. Use ergonomically correct portable and high-powered tools. Choose tools that are well balanced, which require less force and are easier to use.
3. Sit down when working at lower levels. Save your knees and avoid squatting or kneeling when working.
4. Avoid working with your wrists at sharp angles and don't strain your arms. Otherwise, by the end of the job, your body will be suffering from pains.
5. Balance the weight of your tool belt. They are handy, but make necessary adjustments to keep weight evenly distributed on both sides of the belt. |
